Simple Eats: Casa Filipino

Tucked in the corner of Sct. Rodriguez and Sct. Torillo is Chef Laudico’s latest restaurant venture – Casa Filipino. Casa Filipino offers lunch and dinner buffets, pulutan buffets, pulutan and booze buffet, and more. The restaurant was newly launched last September with the chef team of Chef Laudico and Chef Lau. There was ample parking space when we went. The staffs were courteous and very attentive. The place was rather huge with the 2nd floor acting as function rooms that can fit 60 – 80 people.

Their buffet is just PHP488.00 and already includes Lechon, Angus Ribs, Binamban na Liempo and more. The chef team added a new twist to the otherwise common Filipino dishes.

Hot appetizers were located in the ante-sala. The sisig was presented as an appetizer placed in a tortilla casing. I liked the fried lumpiang ubod. The skewered liempo and tofu were also good. I also liked the camote balls and the various palaman or dipping sauces for the pandesal. The pandesal was not as soft though. The pizzas (don’t know why these were included) tasted reheated also.

For main courses, they had a variety of dishes to choose from. What made the dishes stand out was their dish presentation. It was not your typical buffet set-up. Each dish was meticulously placed in a casserole with a heating device underneath. The variety of choices was more than enough. They had Angus Kare Kare, Crab Roe Pasta, Crab, Adobo Rice w/ Angus, Beef Stew, and others. The carving station had the lechon, angus ribs, binamban na lechon and chicken.

For dessert, they have suman balls, suman w/ panna cotta, Tablea flourless cake, Maja Blanca and others. Halo halo shooters and brazo de mercedes shooters can also be ordered (included in the buffet). I thought that the suman desserts were very innovative.

Everyone agreed that the beef stew was a winner. I liked the Angus ribs also. My mom loved the lumpiang ubod and the suman balls.

A few criticisms though were that some of the dishes tasted bland. The pork sinigang (tamarind soup) did not taste like sinigang but rather water with an unusual smell. The lechon was also not as crispy anymore.

Overall, I liked the ambiance of the place. Although it was huge, it had a homey feel to it. The food was so-so and needed improvement but for PHP488.00, the place is worth a try. And hey, they just opened so I’m sure they will continue to improve and offer unique and tasty dishes.
