Simple Eats: Food Indulgence in Marriott Cafe

As promised, I’m posting more scrumptious pictures of what to expect at Marriott Cafe. We were initially drawn in by an article H read in the Inquirer about the writer’s experience with Marriott Cafe. Armed with our Marriott card and voucher, we went last Sunday along with my MIL to try it out.

We decided to try it out on a Sunday. The regular price is at a PHP2000 nett and this is inclusive of the drinks being served in the buffet. The Cru Steakhouse is also opened and you get to try their steaks and foie gras.

Freshly shucked oysters … Super yummy! Had at least 8 pieces of this with cocktail sauce

The Carnivore corner
After the seafood corner, expect to see their Roast Turkey, Rib Eye and Leg of Lamb in the carving station. I sampled the leg of lamb and the rib eye. The rib eye was good but the lamb was a bit tough.

The Salad Corner
I thought this area was rather misplaced. After going through the carving area, the soup station and just across the Chinese food station is a well laid-out salad bar or area. I wasn’t feeling eating healthy that day so I didn’t try any of the salads. They looked good though.

There was also a Filipino food station with this Lechon being the highlight of that area -
Marriott-14

As usual, they have a Chinese and a Japanese counter. I didn’t get to taste either but H said the Japanese sushis and sashimis were good.
Marriott-13

They also have a fresh pasta station where pasta is rolled out and cooked. I found this interesting and had a plate of tortellini, gnocchi and ravioli.
Marriott-15

If you’ve been reading my blog long, you’ll know that I have a fondness for foie gras. Courtesy of the Cru Steakhouse which they include on Sunday brunch or lunch, foie gras is included -
Marriott-16

In addition to the foie gras, you’ll also get steaks and ribs from the Cru Steakhouse section.

Drinks
I initially didn’t notice that drinks were included not until we overheard one of the servers informing the table beside us. I sampled the guava iced tea and the blueberry shake. The guava was a bit sweet for me but the blueberry shake was surprisingly refreshing.
Marriott-17

Oh! They also have a cocktail bar though rather crudely placed on a buffet table with a barista serving. I sampled the Bloody Mary but didn’t like it.
Marriott-18

The Chocolate Room
I can’t deny it. We were really intrigued with their Chocolate Room. The article in Inquirer emphasized this and a dessert addict as I am, I really had to try this. True enough, there was a room dedicated to their desserts. A wall with pots of truffles. A table of chocolate crisps. A macaroon tree. And loads and loads of desserts with some bits of chocolate to choose from.

My only comment? Instead of a tarpaulin banner at the background, they should have put a nicer looking wall decor. Makes it more elegant and put together. Why not let us design the background for you, Marriott?

And before I forget, their ice creams and gelatos are also included.
Marriott-19

I thought the food selection and quality were really good. The seafoods were really fresh. The carving selection with the Cru steakhouse selection should satisfy any meat lover cravings. The dessert selection is fantastic with the chocolate room and the ice cream selections.

The food arrangement and flow could use a lot of improvement though. I would also prefer to have more cheese variation (but that’s me since I love cheeses).

I would definitely be coming back for more. Expect to see us use more of the vouchers and the Marriott card we purchased. Do I consider this the best buffet in town? For now, its a BIG resounding YES! :)

What is Anencephaly?

Thought I’d digress from my usual post of food, travels and stuff. I was touched by the story of the Walker family which is all around Facebook right now (Facebook initially deleted Baby Grayson James’ photo and banned Heather’s account for 24 hours. They later apologized to the family). Heather gave birth to Baby Grayson James. Baby Grayson James suffered from Anencephaly. What is Anencephaly?

Anencephaly is a defect in the closure of the neural tube during fetal development. The neural tube is a narrow channel that folds and closes between the 3rd and 4th weeks of pregnancy to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo. Anencephaly occurs when the “cephalic” or head end of the neural tube fails to close, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. Infants with this disorder are born without a forebrain (the front part of the brain) and a cerebrum (the thinking and coordinating part of the brain). The remaining brain tissue is often exposed–not covered by bone or skin. A baby born with anencephaly is usually blind, deaf, unconscious, and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a rudimentary brain stem, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining consciousness. Reflex actions such as breathing and responses to sound or touch may occur.

Despite knowing that Baby Grayson suffered from Anencephaly early on in her pregnancy, she and her husband decided to push through with the pregnancy. Despite knowing that Baby Grayson would just live a short time, she still decided to bring him to life. The courage to push through and the faith in God are just some values I truly admire in the story of this family.

Check out her blog and her and her family’s journey during the pregnancy and after.

Simple Eats: The Food Barn

We’re back in the Kapitolyo area! I wanted to try a new one so H suggested The Food Barn. I haven’t been there before but H has and so he knew what to order – Chorizo Pasta with extra garlic sticks, garlic and cheese pizza, fish in bechamel sauce and bread pudding for dessert.

The food was simple but yummy. The garlic sticks weren’t just garlic sticks. Once you reach the middle, oozing cheese flows out. The thin crust pizza was crunchy and well prepared. The chorizo pasta was a standout. It was spicy yet sweet at the same time. The chorizos were home cooked and had the right amount of sweetness for me. Warm and fudgy, the pudding capped off the entire meal. Total bill? Php750. That’s inclusive of a root beer float and a bottomless iced tea (lemongrass or peach).

Interesting to note also is that this is one of those hole in the wall restaurants which put an emphasis on the details. Their utensils are nicely wrapped in napkin and tied. Food presentation was also nice. Look at the pudding. They even added a dusted sugar fork silhouette beside the bread pudding. Also, they gave us free mints that came with the bill.

This is a small hole in the wall restaurant with top notch service and good home cooked food.

Simple Eats: Friuli Trattoria

Coming back from Thailand, I was craving for food in the Teacher’s Village area. Yesterday, the whole area was rather quiet so we had a pick on which restaurant we will be dining at. We eventually chose Fruili Trattoria. It is rather unassuming restaurant beside Krazy Katsu.

We were seated on the 2nd floor which had approximately 10 tables on it. A steep swirling stair case goes up to the 2nd floor, quite a fire hazard issue if you ask me. Anyhow, as we were given the menu, we decided to share a Margherita pizza, mozzarella sticks and a pesto pasta.

The Margherita pizza wasn’t bad with huge tomatoes and lots of cheese on top. Crust was thin and crunchy. For Php185.00, it was big enough to be shared with 3 of us.

The pesto pasta was nothing special.

I loved the mozzarella sticks. The dip it came with was slightly spicy with the right kick.

Our overall bill was a student-friendly Php560. :)

Simple Travels: 5 Things We Did in Thailand

Thailand has always been a happy place for me. Good and affordable food. Nice tourist spots. Great shopping areas. There are lots to do in Thailand. 3 days is never enough but you make do with whatever vacation time you have. These are 5 things my mom and I did in Thailand -

  1. EAT. EAT. EAT. We had a late lunch at Kuppa. Enjoyed their Truffle, Mascarpone and Onion Pizza. I can still smell the truffles. Savored their crispy pork leg over red cabbage and creamy mashed potatos and finished it off with their freshly brewed Kuppa coffee. We tried out a few never been tried restaurant – Lemongrass. Too expensive for the type of food they serve. Not recommended. We satisfied our seafood cravings at Somboon, fried curry crab meat, steamed seabass in chili oil and spicy vegetables. We also enjoyed the food at the Platinum food court – Mango with Sticky rice and Water Chestnut in Coconut. Before we left Bangkok, we also had a scrumptuous breakfast buffet at Intercontinental Hotel. Their home-made strawberry and blueberry jams are just divine. :)
  2. Massage. We got our massage fix at Ruen Nuad. A 2 hour Thai massage of stretching and twisting made our body ready for the next day’s walk.
  3. SHOP. SHOP. SHOP. Bangkok is filled with rows and rows of malls, from high end ones to whole-sale malls. We visited only 2 this trip – MBK and Platinum Mall. Again, saw some great finds. Bought a lot for Warren. Was also able to buy a few pasalubongs for H and my mom-in-law.
  4. Temple Visits. We asked for blessings from the Erawan Shrine and visited the buddhas at the Wat Po area.
  5. Ride a Tuktuk, the BTS and a Taxi. So, our hotel provides a shuttle in the form of a tuktuk out of the hotel to the nearest BTS station – Nana Station, We took the BTS a few times this trip but our foremost mode of transportation is the Taxi. Flagdown rate is not too bad at B25. Most of our trips cost us roughly B60 so it would have cost the same had we taken the BTS. Traffic also wasn’t too bad this time around.

So, that’s what we did in our recent 4-day visit to Thailand! :)

About my iPhone 4s

I got my iPhone courtesy of my dad. I wouldn’t have switched if it wasn’t a gift. Ive always thought that purchasing a phone that’s more than php30k is way too expensive. When I had my previous Nokia die on me as it swam with me during ondoy, I opted to purchase a lower version of my phone since it was php5000 cheaper. There were disadvantages like it hanging frequently but it was a good call and text phone. Anyhow, since I got my iPhone, I’ve been able to do a lot more with my mobile phone.
1.) Check multiple mails and respond to them ASAP
2.) Take photos and upload to social networking sites immediately. Hello, instagram and twitter.

Here are some photos I took in Thailand using my iPhone and edited using Instagram –

Simple Eats: Eating at Home

As part of our attempt to lessen our eating out food budget, we had dinner at home yesterday. It was H’s turn to cook. We had Steak, Steamed Dory in Asian sauce, and mashed potatoes. We had left-over Gloria Maris food so I had those heated.

The steak were given to us by my sis-in-law Lilliam. H had it seasoned and grilled. I’m still preferring the meltique steak over this.

20120511-110530.jpg

The fish was so Yummy. Infused with very simple seasonings, this dish came out light and very refreshing to the palette.

Till our next cooking at home adventure. :)

Simple Travels: Fraser Suites Sukhumvit Thailand

For this trip to Thailand with my mom, I was actually looking for a place to stay in the Sukhumvit area. Previously, we were booked at the Grand Central which had an amazing toilet. Unfortunately, the rate in Agoda for the hotel was already at Usd$230 per night. Way too expensive! While searching at Agoda, I stumbled upon Fraser suites, a service apartment in Sukhumvit Soi 11. Perfect! I booked the apartment for around PHP11,000+ for a 3nights stay. That’s inclusive of taxes already. One of the things I considered for it was that they also offered a shuttle going out of the hotel to Nana station. Fraser was rather at the far end of Soi 11 and taking a taxi all the time would make travel cost higher.

Here’s a look at our apartment –
